This page compares draft talent available on each roster. True, not all drafts are created equal, and sometimes true generational players arise from them, but still, at the end, with two hundred-plus players selected over thirty years, the average drafting chances should have evened out more or less.
Here we analyze players that play each season for each team. The players are scanned for their draft pick (the undrafted ones are assigned position 300). The players who are in the first three years of their career are marked in green color. The players who are past year 16 are marked red.
The draft score is computed for each team. In general, each pick yields 300/(pick+2) points. However, the players in their first three years are scaled by the factor of Year/4, and the players past year 16 are scaled by (20-Year)/4, with the factor never going below 0.25.
The number of games played in a season by a player is not taken into account. The draft picks are taken from the German(!) version of the NHL.com website, since the new version of the English and French websites dropped that information. The teams are presented from year 1987 onwards.
